VW Polo in Kyritzer Untersee: Where has the driver gone?

On the night of today, July 16, 2025, a mysterious incident occurred at Kyritzer Untersee in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district that brought the police to the scene. Loud daily news an angler alerted when he observed a car diving into the waters of the lake. Police and rescue workers immediately went to the scene to search for possible occupants of the vehicle.

A brave police officer immediately sat down in the cool water and smashed the driver's window of the VW Polo that was in the water. But the emergency services were relieved when he announced that there were no people in the vehicle. The car was eventually rescued from the water by the fire department. Three people were interviewed on the bank, but they said they had not noticed the incident.

Accident escape in the Kyritz area

Initial police investigations showed that the VW Polo was registered to a 57-year-old woman from the region. So far, the officers have not been able to make contact with her or her husband, which is why they are now investigating a hit-and-run accident. The exact circumstances that led to this car driving into the water remain unclear for the time being.

But this incident isn't the only thing that shows the high risk on our roads. Another report from News38 also makes it clear that weather conditions such as snow, ice and slippery conditions constantly increase the danger for drivers. A 20-year-old driver of a VW Polo in Salzgitter slipped due to the slippery road and low sun. The accident occurred on Sunday morning, January 28, when his car left the road, rolled over and landed upside down in a ditch. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured in this accident.

A look at road safety

Like that Federal Environment Agency reports, winter road conditions have repeatedly led to a high number of traffic accidents in the past, particularly in the months from December to February. Even if the number of accidents is falling overall, the risk of accidents remains high in the warm months due to the increased volume of traffic, especially from cyclists and pedestrians.

Against the background of these events, it is extremely important that road users take warnings seriously and behave correctly in extreme situations. The federal and state governments are required to adapt the transport infrastructure to changing climatic conditions in order to minimize such incidents in the future and increase safety for all road users.
