Future of BER: Meeting on the airport region and public transport on July 9th!
Today, on July 9, 2025, the study commission “Financing and design of local public transport in Brandenburg and the development of the Brandenburg airport region” will meet for a meeting at 10 a.m. The main topic: the role of BER Airport in the region. Citizens are warmly invited to take part in this important discussion. The deadline for registration is July 10, 2025, and those interested can either send an email to ek8-2@landtag.brandenburg.de or register by phone on 0331 966 1168, how landtag.brandenburg.de reported.
A particularly exciting highlight of the session will be the economic importance of BER, including a capacity analysis and international comparisons. Experts such as Torsten Fritz from the Ministry of Economics, Labor, Energy and Climate Protection and Thomas Kohr from Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH will speak on the topics. Heike Zettwitz, the first alderman of the Dahme-Spreewald district, will also be present. The full agenda and livestream information is available on the Commission's website and the recording of the meeting can be accessed in the media library the following day.
Planned connections to BER
The connection to the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport is carried out via a well-thought-out transport concept. The latest information shows that expanding the rail network is one of the biggest priorities. The extension of the S-Bahn from Berlin-Schönefeld Airport station to the new tunnel station under the airport has already been completed. With its six tracks directly under the central terminal, this airport station is a real hub for travelers like the berlin.de reported.
The transport concept provides for various connections, including:
The role of airports in the economy
Airports are not only an essential element of travel, but also important business locations. In 2022, German airports recorded around 200 million passengers and a freight volume of around 4.5 million tons. Air traffic increased 7% in 2024 compared to the previous year, having a lasting impact on the economy from schools to construction companies, such as fachzeitungen.de clarified.
The construction industry in particular has immense opportunities in the area of airport infrastructure. Well-maintained runways and taxiways are essential for smooth operations. An example of such a project is the night-time renovation of Frankfurt Airport, which was carried out within a short period of time without significantly disrupting flight operations.
The close connection between an airport and regional economic development is unmistakable. BER has the potential to play a central role not only in the Brandenburg region, but also for the whole of Germany. This shows that every step in planning and infrastructure is crucial to making this vision a reality.
