Germany celebrates a fantastic opening victory at Prague Baseball Week!

The German men's national team got off to an impressive start at the start of Prague Baseball Week on June 27, 2025, defeating the Austrian team 11-1. This means the team returns with confidence as they prepare for a series of challenging games. The match ended early in the eighth inning after Germany scored the eleventh run and clearly dominated the game.

In the first two innings, the German team led the way and already put six runs on the scoreboard. Austria had a difficult time despite some good moves, while they had to commit a total of four errors, which played into Germany's hands. Starter Philipp Kleehaupt had a brilliant international debut, allowing just four hits and two walks in six innings while recording an impressive six strikeouts. His outstanding game earned him the title of “German Player of the Game”. National coach Jendrick Speer praised not only Kleehaupt, but also Jonathan Schäffer for their strong performances.

A strong team

The German national team, consisting of 20 talented players, will compete against teams from Austria, Italy and the host country Czech Republic during the tournament. After an intense World Baseball Classic Qualifier in March, the focus here is on the upcoming European Championship. The German Baseball and Softball Association (DBV) carefully put together the squad with an eye on the players' performance in the German Baseball League (DBL).

Particularly noteworthy are three shooting stars of the Gauting Indians: Elias Huber, Tobias Maul and Philipp Kleehaupt. Experienced veterans such as Eric Brenk and Markus Solbach from the Bonn Capitals and Alexander Schmidt from the Guggenberger Legionnaires Regensburg are also represented. The entire squad is made up as follows:

name Association
Vincent Ahrens Cologne Cardinals
Simon Bäumer Guggenberg Legionnaires Regensburg
Eric Brenk Bonn Capitals
Philipp Kleehaupt Gauting Indians
Tobias Maul Gauting Indians
Markus Solbach Bonn Capitals

On to the next games

The next game is against Italy on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Germany will try to carry the momentum from their opening win into the next match. The team is optimistic and well prepared to take the next steps towards the European Championships in Prague.

Baseball has a long tradition in Germany, dating back to the first official games at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936. After World War II, U.S. troops popularized the sport, and it has continued to evolve since then. Citrus German Baseball and Softball Association (DBV) plays a central role in promoting talent and the further development of sport in Germany. By 2029, the baseball market is forecast to further increase to up to $7.63 million. This means that German baseball is in strong international competition and is enjoying growing popularity.
