Germany is wooing scientists: Escape from the USA!

At a time when scientific integrity is under pressure worldwide, Federal Minister Bär visited the Geomar Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Kiel on August 10, 2025 and highlighted Germany's distinction as a new home for scientists from the USA. “Germany is an attractive alternative for professors, post-docs and students,” emphasized Bär, referring to the academic freedom enshrined in the Basic Law, which is considered a fundamental prerequisite for independent research. This freedom is becoming increasingly important, especially in light of the current challenges in the international higher education environment.

The problem of anti-science is being discussed not only in Germany, but worldwide. Tagesspiegel reports that US President Trump is currently inciting against various top universities and is thus drawing attention to a climate of skepticism and mistrust that has been exacerbated by the climate and Corona crisis. In the recent past, universities have failed to clearly communicate their essential contributions to the common good. This means that many citizens often cannot understand the benefits of research and teaching.

Scientific freedom as a central challenge

The discussion about academic freedom has gained importance due to political influence, international tensions and ethical conflicts. As the Humboldt University of Berlin makes clear, this freedom is protected as a fundamental right in the German Basic Law. Academic freedom is fundamental for controversial debates and necessary social progress. In the summer semester of 2025, various institutions addressed the ongoing threat to academic freedom, so that the urgent need to defend this freedom is undisputed.

The Ottawa Declaration, published in June 2025 by the science academies of the G7 countries, highlights the importance of academic freedom and responsible research. These aspects are of crucial importance not only at the national but also at the international level, especially since discussions about inviting or disinviting speakers to universities are becoming increasingly controversial.

A call for international talent

In view of these global developments, there is a great opportunity for Germany. Minister Bär emphasizes that talent is being actively recruited who are now migrating to Europe due to the anti-scientific climate in the USA. Compared to the tense conditions in the USA, Germany seems to be becoming increasingly attractive as a paradise for researchers looking for a safe space for their work and discussions.

The connection between academic freedom, university autonomy and social responsibility is fundamental to meeting the challenges currently faced by universities. Only through clear communication and the defense of these basic values can society's trust in scientific institutions be strengthened. Developments in Germany could be the key to a new beginning for many international talents.
