Tourism in Germany on course for a record: 223 million overnight stays in the first half of the year!

Tourism in Germany is flourishing! As Deutschlandfunk reports, the industry is heading for another record in 2025. Around 223 million overnight stays were registered in hotels and larger accommodation establishments in the first half of the year. This number is slightly higher than the comparable period in the record year 2024, which shows that the population's enthusiasm for travel remains unbroken.

However, a small downer comes from abroad. Although international demand is showing a decline, it is more than offset by increased domestic demand. Tourism, for example, benefits from the numerous events and opportunities that Germany offers.

Tourism figures on record

Federal Statistical Office Germany reached a new milestone with 496.1 million overnight stays. This corresponds to an increase of 1.9% compared to 2023 and is even 0.1% higher than the record year of 2019. What is particularly noteworthy is that 31.0 million guest overnight stays were registered in December 2024 alone - an increase of 3.6% compared to the previous year.

Overnight stays by German guests have also developed positively. In 2024, 410.8 million overnight stays were recorded, which is 1.1% more than in 2023 and 1.3% above the 2019 level. Foreign guests, on the other hand, stayed overnight in 85.3 million cases. Although this is an increase of 5.4% compared to 2023, it is 5.1% less than 2019.

The trends are changing

Another exciting aspect is the changing travel behavior. Reinhard Meyer, President of the German Tourism Association, emphasizes that the travel behavior of Germans has changed and that more and more short-term bookings are being made. Despite these changes, the industry is showing optimism for the future. The German Tourism Association plans to build on the positive results of the previous year in 2025 and aims to further improve the framework conditions for the industry.

Overall, it shows that tourism to Germany is lively and on the road to success. The numbers give cause for celebration and give rise to hope for another strong year. We definitely have a good hand in the industry!
