Gas levels in Germany: Stable supply despite low values!
Current data on the filling level of the gas storage facilities in Germany on August 24th, 2025, consumption analyzes and forecasts for the season.

Gas levels in Germany: Stable supply despite low values!
On August 24, 2025, the gas storage levels in Germany are at 67.94 percent, which corresponds to an increase of 0.28 percent compared to the previous day. This is a positive sign considering that at the beginning of the year the filling level was rather low at 28.83 percent. Allgäu newspaper reports that the storage facilities have been continuously filled better over the last two months and that the current level is even above the average for the years 2017 to 2021. Nevertheless, the data shows that a little more effort is needed to achieve the legal target of 75 percent by September 1st.
How have the filling levels developed in the last few months? In July 2025, the level was only 50.34 percent, while in June it was 39.65 percent. In comparison, it can be said that demand and usage in the cold months have a strong influence on the filling level. This is particularly clear from the consumption figures: a total of 844 terawatt hours of gas were consumed in 2024, 39 percent of which went to households and businesses, while 61 percent was used by industrial customers. NDR highlights that gas consumption increased by 3.5 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, due to a colder winter and high gas consumption in industry.
How stable is the gas supply?
The Federal Network Agency speaks clearly: the gas supply in Germany is assessed as stable and secure. The gas analysis capacity is around 23 billion cubic meters, spread over around 40 locations across the country. With storage levels at over 100 percent, it is even possible to compress and cool gas to ensure more efficient use. There are legal filling level requirements that aim to reach 95 percent by the beginning of November. These were often fulfilled earlier in previous years. It could be tight this year if storage conditions don't improve quickly.
Particular attention is currently being paid to the largest gas storage facility in Rehden, which is only 2 percent full. However, according to the federal government, this is not a cause for concern as most of the gas storage capacity can be diverted to other regions. Federal Network Agency reports that in 2024 Germany imported a total of 865 TWh of natural gas, mainly from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, while domestic natural gas production remains low.
The look into the future
Germany is planning a transformation towards more renewable energies. By 2030, 80 percent of energy should come from sustainable sources. In the meantime, the gas storage facilities must be well filled to survive the cold winter months. Temperatures in 2024 averaged 0.9°C above the long-term average, which could add additional surprise to the situation. NDR lists that Germany's gas storage facilities still rank fourth in the world in terms of capacity. But for the coming months, it is important to improve the quality of storage management to serve the population and industry.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop, but the current positive trends should make us optimistic. The next few weeks and months will be crucial in order to counteract an impending bottleneck in good time.
