Heat peak summer 2025: Germany sweats under the scorching sun!
The temperatures in North Rhine-Westphalia are climbing to unbearable levels today. According to the current weather data published by Spiegel, we can expect values that will exceed 30 degrees in many places today. It gets particularly hot in Cologne, which encourages people in the city to take happy trips to the shade and water parks, but also leads to dangerous conditions. The Federal Ministry of Health has published heat protection plans to warn the population about the health risks. Small children, people aged 65 and over and people with previous illnesses are particularly at risk.
The signs of the heat are already noticeable on the streets: many people are looking to cool down in spray machines or cool ice cream sundaes. But while the heat creates an exuberant summer atmosphere in many places, it also poses serious dangers. The increasing number of tropical nights - with temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius - indicate climate change that is increasingly affecting people. In recent decades, the number of hot days, defined as those with at least 30 degrees, has increased dramatically. Tagesschau reports that between 2010 and 2024 almost every fifth day was a hot day, while between 1951 and 1990 hardly any year had more than ten hot days.
A look into the future
Forecasts show that we may face up to 15 tropical nights per year by the end of the century. Professor Rüdiger Glaser points out that man-made global warming is driving this trend. The average temperature in Germany has risen from 8.4 degrees Celsius in 1960 to around 10.9 degrees Celsius in 2022. The record temperature of 41.2 degrees, measured on July 25, 2019, could soon become the new normal.
In this climate you have to take good care of yourself and those around you. The offers of help are varied and it is worth studying the Ministry of Health's heat protection plans. This information is helpful for better understanding health risks and protecting yourself accordingly. Last summer showed that heat-related deaths, some of which are only recorded months later, should not be underestimated. There were approximately 2,800 heat-related deaths in 2024, a decrease from 3,100 the previous year, indicating potentially better management of heat-related illnesses.
Devices and gadgets for the summer
