Air conditioning boom in Germany: heat wave triggers record demand!
In recent years, the situation surrounding air conditioning in Germany has changed significantly. The summers are getting hotter and the demand for such devices is increasing noticeably. Loud DW The production of air conditioning devices increased by a whopping 92% in 2022, resulting in a total of almost 317,000 devices. Despite a slight decline in production to 164,700 units in 2023, an overall impressive increase of around 75% can be observed over the last five years.
Why this boom? Also BR reports that the rising temperatures in Germany can no longer be ignored. The German Weather Service (DWD) has announced tropical nights with temperatures over 20 degrees for the coming days - and not even in midsummer. This means that the last few years have had a record number of hot days, with the five warmest years since 1881 reaching their maximum after the year 2000.
Air conditioning as a market trend
The market for air conditioning units is also dynamic. Like statistical forecasts from Statista say, sales of around 300 million euros are expected in 2025. By 2030, the market volume could rise to an impressive €426 million, supported by annual growth of 7.20%. By the way, air conditioning systems for cars do not play a role in these figures; the focus is clearly on stationary devices.
But it is also a fact: Despite increased interest, there is still skepticism about air conditioning units in Germany. Many people are concerned about the costs, health aspects or the environment as well as the noise of the devices. These attitudes are strongly influenced by culture, while in other parts of the world, such as southern Europe or Asia, air conditioning is much more accepted and used. However, Uwe Franzke, managing director of the ILK in Dresden, has observed that the willingness to invest in the private sector is increasing. However, this remains unchanged in public administration.
Imports and exports at a glance
Another aspect to consider is imports. These rose by 48.2% in the last five years and amounted to 949 million euros in 2024, almost equal to the previous year's record value of 957 million euros. Italy remains the leading supplier country with a share of 25%, followed by China with 13.7% and Sweden with 10.4%. Exports of air conditioning units, on the other hand, fell to 713 million euros in 2022, a decrease of 2.8% compared to 2019.
In summary, it can be said that the air conditioning market in Germany has high growth potential, which is significantly influenced by the hot summers and changing consumer habits. The citizens of Cologne can therefore look forward to further trends and developments in this area - “there is something going on” in terms of adapting to changing climatic conditions.
