Krefeld radiates luck: 2nd place in the life satisfaction ranking!

Krefeld, Deutschland - Today, on June 12, 2025, the SKL-Gücksatlas presents the latest results on life satisfaction in major German cities. The Atlas shows that six of the ten cities are located with the most satisfied residents in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Krefeld achieved second place, followed by Düsseldorf in third place and Aachen in fifth place. In addition, Münster, Mönchengladbach and Duisburg take place seven, eight and ten.

The ranking is based on over 23,000 surveys that were carried out between January 2022 and April 2025. Bernd Raffelhüschen from the University of Freiburg held the scientific direction. This year there is a significant increase in life satisfaction in several cities, especially in Krefeld, Düsseldorf and Duisburg. While cities with over 400,000 inhabitants, such as Cologne and Dortmund, have lower satisfaction values, smaller cities offer a more positive living environment.

urban quality of life and satisfaction

The study records both subjective life satisfaction and the objective quality of life, which are evaluated by 50 characteristics such as living situation, age structure and environmental quality. In most of the 40 cities examined, the Satis Faction Score has increased. Kassel, which takes first place with a life satisfaction of 7.44 points, is particularly noteworthy and is therefore the most successful city in the ranking. Krefeld follows closely with 7.39 and Düsseldorf with 7.36 points, while Rostock takes last place with only 6.08 points.

Although Karlsruhe achieves top values in objective terms, it only proves the 38th place in subjective life satisfaction. This discrepancy between objective quality and subjective feelings is influenced by various factors that can reduce life satisfaction. In cities that are considered "underperformers", high living costs, poor environmental conditions and a low infrastructure can often be observed.

Factor green spaces for well -being

An important aspect that contributes to life satisfaction are the green areas in the cities. In times of corona and during hot summer, the positive effects of parks and recreation areas are evident. The so-called "3-30-300 formula", which says that three trees should be available within sight, 30 percent tree crown cover and a maximum of 300 meters to the next green area, illustrates the need for sustainable urban development.

Satisfaction in the North Rhine-Westphalian cities is also promoted by less living, larger apartments and a family atmosphere. These factors have a positive effect on the overall well -being of the population. The study also shows that NRW is considered a promoted one of the year and took third place among the federal states with 6.98 points.

Overall, the Glücksatlas 2025 shows positive developments, including increased life satisfaction among various population groups and an approximation to the values before pandemic in leisure satisfaction.
