140 million euros for moor protection – a win for Greifswald!

A fresh wind blows through the moors in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) recently put together a hefty package of 140 million euros to promote moorland protection in the region. This announcement came during a meeting of the state cabinet in Berlin and underlines the federal government's commitment to climate protection. NDR reports that the main focus of the funding is on rewetting the moors. This measure is crucial to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania by 2045.

The region around Greifswald has the best conditions for these federal funds. The renowned peat researcher Hans Joosten, who was awarded the “German Environmental Prize” worth 500,000 euros in 2021, has contributed a lot to sensitive research and development in this topic. The “Greifswald Moor Centrum” develops special plant materials that are used for renaturation and also for innovative shipping packages. These approaches not only represent ecological progress, but also offer opportunities for the region's farmers who can benefit from these developments.

Climate protection in focus

But why are the moors so important for our climate protection? According to the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture BMEL, moor soils make up around 8% of the agriculturally used area in Germany. Nevertheless, they are an enormous source of CO2, as they are responsible for around 53 million tons of CO2 emissions that result from the decomposition of these soils every year. This shows us how essential the protection and rewetting of these valuable areas is in order to achieve the ambitious goals of the Federal Climate Protection Act.

The federal government is pursuing ambitious goals with the National Moor Protection Strategy. These include the annual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents by 2030. The rewetting of drained peatland is considered one of the most important measures for saving emissions - the goal is clearly defined and requires good cooperation between all those involved.

Agriculture in transition

Amid these changes, an integrative approach seems crucial. Farmers working on these lands need clear information and support. The Digital Magazine emphasizes that a transparent understanding of the new rules and possibilities is of central importance. Incentive programs are intended to ensure that peatland protection also brings practical benefits and that farmers are actively involved in the necessary changes.

In summary, the initiative to rewett the moors in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is not only an environmental measure, but also a step towards more sustainable agriculture and more effective climate protection. There is potential here that benefits both nature and the people in the region.
