Alarming increase in cattle thefts in Schleswig-Holstein!

An alarming development has emerged in northern Germany in recent months: the number of cattle thefts, particularly in Schleswig-Holstein, has risen sharply. Reports from NDR According to the LKA Schleswig-Holstein, there is a worrying trend. A criminal gang has stolen a total of 78 lambs in North Frisia, adding to the concerns of many farmers.

The challenges facing farmers are enormous. They repeatedly complain not only about the loss of animals, but also of crops and agricultural equipment. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania this year alone, 17 thefts of plant protection products and seeds have been reported, with damage amounting to almost one million euros. Particularly popular with thieves: GPS devices from agricultural machinery.

The dangers to agriculture

Farmers' concerns are justified. According to a study by Agriculture Today More than half of all farmers are affected by theft. However, many choose not to report the incidents. The reasons for this are often the low chances of success in police investigations and the effort that has to be made to file a criminal complaint. It is often expected that the stolen goods will never appear again.

Confidence in investigative authorities is dwindling while farmers are forced to strengthen their security measures. Surveillance systems are installed and security services are hired to better secure their fields and pastures. However, the challenge remains great as the perpetrators often remain undetected.

Approaches to improve the situation

The affected farmers are calling on the police to take tougher action against crime and provide more frequent patrols. Over 60% of farmers believe that more police presence is needed. They hope that more intensive cooperation and better visibility of the security forces can improve the situation. The investigation of such thefts by authorities also shows positive results, as demonstrated by some successful cases.

The problem of theft in agriculture is by no means new, but current developments are causing concern and unrest among farmers. For many, a good knack for security planning could be the key to arming themselves against growing threats. The pressure on the authorities to increase security in rural areas is increasing - because, as the example of farmer Viktoria Gloyer from Schleswig-Holstein shows, even confidential offers such as eggs are no longer safe in a trust fund.

Overall, there is a lack of confidence in the security situation and many farmers are wondering whether it is worth actually reporting thefts. These uncertainties are not only worrying, but also show how important it is to seriously reflect on the issue and find solutions - not only for those affected, but also for regional agriculture as a whole.
