Where the cultural scene comes alive, summer can come! The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and invites music lovers to a colorful festival full of highlights. In Ulrichshusen, picturesquely located in the Mecklenburg Lake District, a classical festival will be organized from June 13th in various venues, including churches, parks and manor houses, which will also include light music and cabaret. Every year, up to 80,000 visitors flock to the festival, which has now become the largest classical music festival in Germany. [n-tv.de].

This year the festival is relying on a glittering opening with the legendary conductor Herbert Blomstedt, who will lead the St. Georgen Church in Wismar at the proud age of 97. Blomstedt is no stranger; he appeared at the festival for the first time in 1997. The cellist Anastasia Kobekina, who won the soloist prize in 2016, will also be giving a series of around 20 concerts this year in which she will present the diverse facets of her instrument. ndr.de highlights that the festival also puts the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the NDR Big Band in the spotlight.

A feast for the senses

The celebrations begin with a chamber concert in Ulrichshusen Palace, where works by Kodály, Ravel and Halvorsen will be on the program. On Sunday afternoon, Beethoven and Mozart are on the program and will be performed by talented soloists such as Emmanuel Tjeknavorian, who also appears as conductor this year. Ursula Haselböck, the director, emphasizes the excellent performance of the award winners and their importance for the festival, which sees itself as a “cultural reunification venture,” according to founding director Matthias von Hülsen.

In addition, on Sunday morning, visitors can expect a special discussion with permanent musical guests about their most impressive concert experiences. And that should only be the beginning, because the entire festival summer offers a total of 136 events until September 14th!

Culture and diversity on every corner

The festival is not only a musical highlight, but also a cultural showcase that includes bicycle-format projects in Schwerin, a bicycle concert and a small festival in the large park at Ludwigslust Castle. A very special, large open-air concert in the park of Bothmer Castle will be celebrated at the end of August, at which the NDR Big Band will perform with unknown manuscripts by Heinz Erhardt, which his granddaughter discovered.

So if you want to combine the event, get ready for advance bookings for selected concerts to start on November 29th. As soon as the posters about the latest concert series are hanging in the establishments, there will be a lot of “music” again!
