Large fire brigade exercise in Wiek: fire risk in the spa clinic mastered!
In the last few days, the health clinic in the Rügen-Nord district was the scene of an extensive fire drill. On October 26, 2025, the local emergency services were alerted when a report of smoke development was received in the children's area of the clinic. More than 40 volunteer firefighters took part in the training session, in which the fire departments from Sargard, Wiek, Altenkirchen, Breege and Dranske cooperated. The main goal? Find two missing people from the old wooden buildings of the clinic.
The spa clinic had informed all patients about the test alarm in advance. Considering that most of the institution's buildings are made of wood, preventive fire protection is of central importance. Regular exercises ensure that emergency services are well prepared for an emergency. As NDR reports, these operations are not only crucial for the safety of patients, but also for the training of the fire departments.
Secure doors for the future
There was another example of dedicated fire service work recently in the rheumatism clinic in Bad Wildungen. The fire department carried out a practical operational exercise there on Tuesday, during which the alarm was raised at 7:15 p.m. with the keyword “F BMA”. When emergency services arrived, heavy smoke was visible and there were reports of a deflagration and several people being in the building. The operational cue was quickly increased to “F 3 Y” as lives were in danger.
Two respiratory protection teams immediately rushed into the building to rescue people and fight the fire. Within a very short time, three people were brought outside, while two others were rescued from a window on the fifth floor using the turntable ladder. The suspected fire was quickly extinguished and the building was cleared of smoke using a compressed air ventilator. During the debriefing, military leader Alexander Conradi praised the smooth running of the exercise, while the rheumatism clinic also offered its support for future exercises.
Modern training methods
In parallel to these practical exercises, dealing with fire and the risk of fire in hospitals is becoming increasingly important. Proper preparation can mean the difference between life and death. An innovative training tool is the VR Fire Trainer, which makes it possible to practice in realistic virtual environments. In this way, employees can learn how to extinguish fires in a practical manner without disrupting the hospice process. This process is particularly environmentally friendly because no real extinguishing agents are used, which also saves cleaning and disposal costs. The Management Hospital emphasizes that Gloria has only manufactured fluorine-free fire extinguishing devices since the end of 2024. This is in line with the EU regulation that prohibits the use of foams containing PFAS.
Overall, these examples show how seriously safety precautions are taken in medical facilities. Regular exercises and modern training methods are indispensable components for protecting patients and staff. In a world where safety is paramount, both responders and clinicians can feel confident that they are well prepared.
