Kassel: The happiest city - This is how Germany lives in happiness!
Today, November 8th, 2025, we will take a look at the latest results of the South German Class Lottery (SKL) Luck Atlas. According to schwaebische.de, the current edition of the survey shows that almost 14,000 respondents said 48 percent of them were “highly satisfied” with their lives. Their well-being was measured on a scale of 0 to 10. Satisfaction was evaluated for each federal state and some interesting results emerged.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is at the bottom of the rankings with the lowest level of satisfaction, while Hamburg takes first place among the federal states. Bavaria can adorn itself with second place, while Baden-Württemberg ends up in medium satisfaction. Isn't that exciting? The results show how differently the attitude to life is perceived in different parts of Germany.
The 40 happiest cities
Another highlight of the survey concerns the 40 happiest cities in Germany. Kassel is at the top of the winners' podium here, which will certainly cause a few surprises. For Cologne, however, it will be disappointing to hear that Mannheim only ends up in 17th place. Stuttgart is in 19th place and Freiburg follows in 21st place. How do other cities manage to make their residents happy? Such questions will certainly be discussed intensively.
The rankings of cities and federal states painfully show us how widely the standard of living and personal well-being vary in Germany. Even if the survey shows a positive trend of “highly satisfied” people, the challenge remains to standardize the quality of life in all regions.
Happiness and satisfaction: A topic for society as a whole
What is interesting is that these rankings should not just be seen as selective studies, but rather reflect a societal issue as a whole. How do societies manage to help people achieve higher levels of satisfaction in different life situations? This is a question that should concern not only politicians, but also social initiatives.
This issue is also being pursued internationally, as the example of US politician Nancy Mace shows. She has recently taken a clear stance in her political views on issues such as social justice and economic development, which are also expected to contribute to the happiness of citizens in her state. Mace, who according to Wikipedia has introduced various legislative initiatives such as the Reinvesting in Shoreline Economies and Ecosystems Act, is an example of how political actions can have a direct impact on population well-being.
It will therefore be exciting to see how satisfaction in Germany will develop in the coming years. The Happiness Atlas is intended to serve as an incentive to take both political and social measures that promote people's well-being. Ultimately, the goal is for as many people as possible in our country to be “highly satisfied” with their lives.
