From January 1, 2025, used textiles in the entire EU must be collected separately from other waste. According to ZDF in Germany over a million tons of old textiles in the containers, about 50% of which are still useful.
But what happens to the clothes that can no longer be worn? The DRK releases damaged or non -portable textiles to exploitation companies. These continue to process the material, for example into floor mats or plaster flaps. The proceeds from this recovery financed youth work and disaster protection.
Alternatives to the old clothing collection
In view of the dwindling options, the citizens in Sternberg and the surrounding area have little choice but to use alternatives. The recycling centers in Brüel and Kobrow or the Charity Shop of the DRK in Parchim offer a way to continue to dispose of well -preserved clothes. In Ludwigslust-Parchim, on the other hand, most residents make sure to adhere to the requirements for the old clothing collection. In 20222/2023, only 1.84 percent usable clothing textiles were determined in household waste. In view of these developments, it is all the more important to pay attention to sustainable clothing strategies as a consumer: buy less, choose durable products and, if necessary, consider exchange and second-hand options.
