Hagenow upgrades the schoolyard: green classroom and modern play paradise!
The city of Hagenow, located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, is facing an exciting change! Extensive renovation work is underway at the schoolyard of the “Am Mühlenteich” city school. How NDR reports, the schoolyard will be modernized in the coming months and numerous new elements will be added that will not only enrich everyday school life, but also promote environmental awareness among the students.
A central element of the planned measures is the modernization of the rainwater system. In this way, excess water will be safely drained away in the future and the problem of flooding will be reduced at the same time. Furthermore, new play areas with modern play equipment and a small sports field are being planned. Another addition will be the “Green Classroom,” which will allow students to enjoy classes outdoors. For this purpose, comfortable seating furniture should be set up to increase the quality of time outdoors.
A piece of nature for the school
There are also reports of the planting of various hedges and trees. This is not only intended to provide shade, but also to contribute to improving the microclimate. German environmental aid highlights that schoolyards are increasingly being transformed into green oases as part of such projects. These transformations contribute to the promotion of urban greenery and adaptation to climate change. School communities are actively integrated into the process to take their wishes and needs into account.
Generous funding from the federal, state and local governments is also available, amounting to around 925,000 euros. This investment is intended not only to improve physical conditions, but also to support children's mental and creative development. Ultimately, schools should not only serve as educational institutions, but also be places where children and young people can feel comfortable and develop. The IKEA Foundation supports similar initiatives and promotes projects that provide students with nature-based experiences, be it through school gardens or the creation of green classrooms.
A look into the future
Construction is scheduled to begin this year and the work is expected to be completed in about four months. This amounts to an upgrade of the entire school environment and gives the students not only an attractive place to learn, but also a space to play and develop.
Together with the planned measures to renew the old wall and fence along the mill pond, the area will not only be safer, but also more aesthetically pleasing. It is a step that shows how education and environmental awareness can go hand in hand and how schoolyards can develop into lively learning and living spaces.
