Mobility in the Schwerin area: Criticism of public transport and cycle paths!

Mobility – a topic that is of utmost importance not only in large cities, but especially in rural regions. The current survey results as part of the “Heimatcheck”, which focus on mobility in northwest Mecklenburg and Ludwigslust-Parchim, clearly show that there is a need for action here. Loud Northern Courier Local public transport in northwest Mecklenburg only received 5.08 out of 10 points, a truly modest value that the catering industry has to top with an even worse 4.35 points. The region's residents expressed concern about delays and cancellations in public transport and the poor quality of cycle paths.

One of the main elements of this survey was satisfaction with access to public transport and the cycle path network. Despite the existence of cycle paths, residents complain about their poor condition; they are often even shared with footpaths, which makes cycling anything but safe. Warin, a municipality in this area, scores particularly poorly for mobility with 3.03 points and is particularly faced with the lack of cycle paths.

Analysis of the results

The survey included a total of 16,664 participants, with around 3,000 coming from northwest Mecklenburg and Ludwigslust-Parchim. The results showed that Northwest Mecklenburg was rated sixth out of 15 overall in traffic with 5.73 points. This rating includes the noise and traffic pollution that many residents struggle with. While the municipality of Lützow is below average with 4.77 points, residents here report uncontrolled 30 zones. In the lottery of satisfaction, Ludwigslust-Parchim also did not see itself in the best light with 5.79 points for road transport and 4.95 for local public transport.

On the other hand, the on-call bus project is highlighted positively, although it is often overloaded, but represents a ray of hope among the existing options. Those surveyed also expressed the desire for better connections to the city of Schwerin. In particular, university locations and other important hubs should not only be considered, but also specifically addressed.

Regional characteristics at a glance

The desires for improving cycle paths differ greatly between communities. While the citizens of Wittenburg and Neustadt-Glewe long for their cycle paths to be expanded, others such as Plau am See and Zarrentin are satisfied with the current situation. The rating of the through traffic communities, such as Gresse and Wöbbelin, is rather low, where the scores fluctuate between 3.63 and 4.75.

This survey is not just a snapshot, but can serve as a basis for future improvements to the mobility concept in the region. The residents have spoken and are now hoping for changes that will make their everyday lives easier. Another report on mobility in Crivitz has already been announced, and it will be interesting to see what answers will be given to the pressing questions.
