Garbage fees in the district are rising: This is what you need to know now!

In addition to keeping streets clean, waste management also comes with its share of challenges, especially when it comes to fees. In the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, citizens will be facing some changes starting next year. At the most recent meeting, the district council decided to increase garbage fees. This particularly affects the classic garbage cans that households have to compact.

Anyone who owns a 120 liter bin will have to dig deeper into their pockets to rent it in the future. The monthly costs increase from 9.62 euros to 10.56 euros, which means an annual increase from 115.44 euros to 126.72 euros - a mere 11.28 euros more. The emptying fee also jumps and increases from 7.33 euros to 7.67 euros, which corresponds to around 30 cents.

Rising costs and new fees

The prices for a 60 liter organic waste bin will in future be 24.62 euros per year, which represents a surcharge of almost 3 euros. In addition, the fees for replacing damaged or lost garbage cans will increase by around 4 euros. And that's not all: From the fee period 2026/2027, an additional fee will be charged for the improper disposal of incorrectly filled bins. Previously, this regulation only existed for organic waste bins. The new fees vary between 17.39 and 36.19 euros, depending on the size of the bin.

The reasons for these increases are varied. In particular, the costs of waste disposal exceed revenues by a remarkable 793,376 euros in the period 2022/2023. Further financial problems are also to be expected in the coming years, which will be triggered by the changed pricing of CO₂ emissions when disposing of non-recyclable waste mixtures. These include, for example, contaminated food packaging, mixed plastics and textiles made from mixed fibers.

A look at the waste balance

These developments did not happen out of thin air. According to destatis.de, the annual waste balances in Germany are an important part of waste management. The emergence of plastic waste in particular plays a key role here. The statistics show that only the quantities of plastics collected separately are recorded. Plastics that end up in the gray bin are grouped under “domestic waste, commercial waste similar to household waste”.

The changes in Ludwigslust-Parchim are a clear sign that the topic of waste disposal and, above all, the associated costs are still very important. Municipalities are required to have a good hand when it comes to making waste management future-proof.

What do you think about this increase? Is the habit of separating waste already deeply rooted, or do you see this as a further incentive to take a closer look at your own waste behavior? We are interested in your opinion!
