New wildlife warning signs in Ludwigslust: Protect yourself now!

In the Ludwigslust-Parchim region, drivers are currently advised to pay particular attention to the risk of accidents involving wildlife. According to a report by NDR, every second traffic accident in the district is a collision with wild animals such as deer or wild boar. This has prompted the relevant authority to preemptively put up new warning signs to alert drivers to the potential risks, especially in the upcoming dark season. These signs, with the clear message “Caution Wild”, were installed at several danger points, including on the B321 between Bandenitz and Sudenhof and on the B104 and B192.

But it's not just the new signs, which have been put up a total of twelve times in the district, that are intended to ensure more safety. From October, the district is planning increased speed controls at accident hotspots nordkurier.de. Because the numbers speak for themselves: In 2023, 3,445 wildlife accidents were registered in the district, an increase of 5.6% compared to the previous year. This means that wildlife accidents account for an impressive 45% of all accidents in the district.

Accumulation areas and injured people

Routes such as the B321 between Hagenow and Bandenitz and the B104 are particularly dangerous. These sections represent high-risk areas where the likelihood of an accident involving wildlife is particularly high. The Ludwigslust police station reported that a total of 53 people were injured in wildlife accidents in 2023, including eight seriously injured. These increasing numbers of injuries not only alarm the authorities, but also show that previous measures are inadequate.

Neither comprehensive wildlife protection measures such as fences have been taken, nor are there effective plans for the expansion of wildlife protection infrastructure on motorways 14 and 24. These motorways recorded 228 wildlife accidents in 2023. A recurring problem is the lack of wildlife fences, which are missing for around 60 kilometers along the A 24. Therefore, the risk for drivers traveling in this area remains high fva-bw.de.

Outlook and planned measures

The district's accident commission has taken a close look at the situation, would like to discuss these problematic developments and plan effective countermeasures in the future. Although the awareness raised by the warning signs is welcomed, concrete steps to reduce the number of wildlife accidents in the region are essential. Opportunities such as electronic detection of wildlife accidents and the development of effective wildlife crossing management could be key to improving safety on the roads.

The coming time will show whether the increased controls and the new warning signs can actually lead to a noticeable improvement in the wildlife accident situation. Until then, all drivers can do is appeal to them to always be vigilant and to reduce their speed, especially in risky areas. Good advice because safety should always come first.
