New management duo in the BSW: Langer and Schabbel focus on social issues!

On October 12, 2025 the time had finally come: in Malchin, the BSW in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania elected a new dual leadership. The decision fell on Peter Langer, a 56-year-old chemistry professor from Rostock, and Peter Schabbel, a 58-year-old alternative practitioner and district council member from the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. Both successfully defeated an opposing candidate and are now taking responsibility for the party, which has been through a lot in the last few months.

The two new chairmen succeed the previous duo, consisting of Friedrich Straetmanns and Melanie Dango, who resigned after just ten months for personal reasons. Dango, who works as a pastor, emphasized in her farewell speech that it was now time to hand over responsibility. This comes at a time when BSW poll numbers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have fallen to 7 percent, compared to 10.6 percent in the last federal election.

Focus on social and education

The challenge that the new leadership has accepted is clear: they want to lead the party as a unit in the upcoming state election campaign and are aiming to return to the state parliament with party strength. Peter Langer and Peter Schabbel have already set clear priorities. Schabbel expressed his belief in the importance of giving people a greater say and emphasized the need for a new form of democracy. Langer, on the other hand, plans to promote business settlements and strengthen research and science.

Another key point is the positioning of the new dual leadership towards military build-up. Both Langer and Schabbel advocate a conciliatory tone towards Russia. Co-chair Amira Mohamed Ali supports this stance and clearly calls for “diplomats instead of soldiers”. However, she also points out that Russia's war of aggression should be rejected and draws attention to the responsibility of NATO and the West.

The party landscape at a glance

The elections are just around the corner in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A total of twelve parties are running in the upcoming federal election, including the SPD, the CDU and the Left. People are also curious about the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht – Reason and Justice (BSW), which has just been re-formed. This decision comes at a time when parties such as the AfD, FDP and the Greens are also fighting for the voters' favor.

  • Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD)
  • Alternative für Deutschland (AfD)
  • Christlich Demokratische Union Deutschlands (CDU)
  • Die Linke
  • Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP)
  • Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (Grüne)
  • Partei Mensch Umwelt Tierschutz (Tierschutzpartei)
  • Freie Wähler
  • Volt Deutschland (Volt)
  • Marxistisch-Leninistische Partei Deutschlands (MLPD)
  • Bündnis Deutschland
  • Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht – Vernunft und Gerechtigkeit (BSW)

The voters in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can expect an exciting election campaign, while the new dual leadership of the BSW is already tackling the coming challenges with fresh ideas and approaches. With a clear focus on social justice and education, the new chairmen are likely to hope for a good audience.
