Pinnow pulls the plug: the end of district heating supply is in sight!
In the community of Pinnow near Schwerin, in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, the signs point to change. There are currently 160 households connected to the district heating network, but this system has now reached its end. The municipality has decided that the almost 30-year-old district heating supply will be ended through an “orderly phase-out”. This step was necessary due to the outdated technology and the extremely high heat losses of over 35 percent NDR reported.
What does this mean for the residents? A large proportion of users have already given up using the district heating network, which is driving up the basic costs for the remaining users significantly. Finally, the investment of three to four million euros that would be required to modernize the facility was deemed uneconomical. The facility is scheduled to close in just over five years, which will require all remaining users to convert their heating systems.
Why is the district heating network so vulnerable?
Another aspect that contributes to the decision is the Fuel Emissions Trading Act (BEHG), which introduces CO2 prices for fuels and creates incentives for consumers to make their energy consumption more climate-friendly. The Office Crivitz emphasizes that the additional costs resulting from CO2 pricing are passed on to the end customers. Unfortunately, these price escalation clauses could not be fully taken into account because the legal framework is still being developed.
It should also be noted that the labor price is linked to the price of primary energy sources such as natural gas, which are subject to CO2 pricing. This could lead to a gradual increase in costs from 2021 to 2025, even if the actual price increases in the heating plant are not expected to this extent. Starting this year, these costs will be shown as special items on invoices for the first time.
What comes after district heating?
The municipality of Pinnow is already planning to convert the heating systems of the remaining users in the near future. A user meeting has been announced for a Wednesday evening in Pinnow, in which residents will be informed about the upcoming changes.
The establishment of a municipal company to supply district heating in 2007 and the introduction of climate-friendly energy sources could be future solutions to minimize additional CO2 costs and counteract climate change. Given the current developments, it is to be hoped that Pinnow has a good hand in offering its residents a smooth transition and the necessary support.
