School construction program: 400 million for better education in Ludwigslust!

A lot is being done for school education in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district. Around 60 schools here are under the umbrella of the education system, including 19 vocational schools and institutions with a high school level, all of which are run by the district. The other schools are either primary or regional schools that are financed by municipalities or private providers. But maintaining these schools is a real challenge for smaller communities, especially when finances are tight. Northern Courier reports that the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is investing specifically in school construction from 2024 to 2027 and is providing a total of 400 million euros for this.

How will the money be used? Of course, to improve the infrastructure. Of this, 100 million euros come from state funds and 300 million euros from municipal funds. Every year, 25 million euros flow into new construction and renovation, and the municipalities add an additional 25 million euros per year from financial equalization. This means that 6,996,000 euros are earmarked for the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, quite a chunk, isn't it?

Technical improvements and hygiene standards

But that's not all. In addition to the financial resources, a special Corona protection fund was also created. Funds totaling over 72 million euros are being made available to adapt schools to the new hygiene standards. A total of 73 projects were supported - everything from renovating toilets to improving ventilation and fire protection measures. These construction measures are crucial to ensure face-to-face teaching during and after the pandemic the government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania explained.

The goals of these measures are clear: They should design school operations in such a way that rooms and facilities meet the requirements of everyday school life. Money was not only made available for the renovation, but also for the expansion and conversion of existing school buildings.

A lot of movement in the school building program

The state's school construction program has given school authorities the opportunity to submit needs-based applications for construction work. The projects were sorted according to urgency, so that the prioritized projects received a total of over 24 million euros, according to recent information. The LFI MV states that public general education schools outside of middle and upper centers benefit from this financial support, especially for large projects such as renovations or new buildings.

The district also benefits from the funds made available: in 2024 alone, around 1.3 million euros were invested in public general schools, while almost four million euros were available for district sponsors. And this year, another step towards improving school facilities was taken with around 700,000 euros. The positive trend appears to be continuing.

Construction projects at 32 schools are already being implemented, including highly popular facilities such as the Theodor Körner School in Picher and various school centers with upper secondary schools in Stralendorf and Wittenburg, with primary schools such as Mestlin and regional schools such as Boizenburg also being included in the planning.

Overall, one wonders: How will the training landscape in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania continue to develop? One thing is certain – school building is of great importance so that the next generations can enjoy a solid education.
