Future of anti-discrimination advice in MV is at risk – pressure is growing!
Something is brewing in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: At a specialist conference in Schwerin, the focus was on the challenges of anti-discrimination work. The current discussion revolves around the introduction of a state anti-discrimination law, but the advisory structures for this are in jeopardy. How catapult reports, the three advice centers created in 2023 could close their doors this year if the necessary financing cannot be secured.
The demand for consultations remains high: almost 90 cases were recorded in the first half of 2025. Ten dedicated part-time employees in the advice centers have undergone intensive training in order to best support the diverse concerns of those affected. In fact, in her speech, the Minister of Justice showed great appreciation for the work done, but she remained vague about the financial assurance. The crucial budget negotiations in the state parliament could drag on until the end of the year, which increases uncertainty.
The role of the anti-discrimination agency
While in MV there is an official struggle for a state law, at the national level the Federal anti-discrimination agency serve as an important point of contact for people who have experienced discrimination. Their legally defined tasks include providing information and advice to those affected, providing support in the event of conflicts and carrying out scientific studies. At the same time, the office is tasked with submitting regular reports to the Bundestag and making recommendations to remedy discrimination.
The importance of such positions is in a country like Germany, where... General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) has existed since 2006, is extremely relevant. This law protects citizens from discrimination not only in the workplace, but also in everyday life - be it when shopping or in a restaurant. The anti-discrimination agency is calling for these regulations to be expanded in order to close existing gaps in protection and make it easier for those affected to access their rights.
The future of anti-discrimination work in MV
What remains at the end of this promising anti-discrimination work if the nationwide coalition against discrimination has existed since November 2024, but the financial resources are uncertain? The current situation of advice centers urgently requires a clearer commitment to follow-up funding in order to maintain the valuable support for those affected by discrimination in the long term. A new initiative to introduce a state implementing law for the AGG could help to strengthen the legal foundation of anti-discrimination work in MV and consolidate equality as an undisputed fundamental right.
Time is of the essence, and in addition to the legal urgency, it is above all the fate of those affected that is at stake here. Only with a functioning advisory system can social cohesion be promoted and the voices of those discriminated against be heard.
