Cranes up close: Discover the lucky birds at Lake Galenbeck!

A true natural event is imminent: On Saturday, October 4th, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Environmental and Nature Conservation Foundation invites you to the “Inflight of the Birds of Happiness” event around Lake Galenbeck. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., nature lovers are invited to gather at the viewing platform in Fleethof and experience the fascinating world of cranes.

The tour, which is led by Kai Paulig, area manager and foundation employee, promises an exciting program. First, the participants are introduced to the special features of the nature reserve at the meeting point. After a short presentation of the project, cars continue on to the observation tower near Heinrichswalde, where the cranes can be observed at their roost about 200 meters away.

An important nature reserve

Lake Galenbeck is not only a place for relaxation, but also one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany. Especially in October, numerous cranes rest here before flying on to the south. The region has recovered significantly in recent years thanks to intensive care and renovation. For example, the water quality of the lake improved, which led to a return of bird life, which is now characterized by resting geese, swans and ducks. The breeding bird species were also able to stabilize thanks to the measures, including the sea eagle and the kingfisher.

However, the nature reserve has also suffered from human influence in the past. For example, according to reports from STUN-MV, a drastic decline in habitats and species was observed in the 1970s. At that time, only a small part of the lake floor was covered with plants and there were few visible pondweeds. However, these developments could be halted with active nature conservation measures, allowing the area's flora and fauna to flourish again.

Weatherproof equipped

To ensure that observing nature is a pleasure even in changeable weather, we recommend that you bring weather-appropriate clothing. Participation in the event is free, but donations are warmly welcomed. Please note that dogs are not allowed to be taken along on the tour in order to minimize the animals' susceptibility to disturbance.

The event not only offers the opportunity to observe the cranes in their natural habitat, but also to learn more about nature conservation and the importance of Lake Galenbeck. So pack your binoculars and take the opportunity to experience a piece of untouched nature in all its glory!
