The switch to digital passport photos is slowly gaining momentum, but things are complicated for the citizens of Neubrandenburg. From May 1, 2025, there will be a nationwide obligation to only use digital passport photos when applying for identity cards and passports. Paper photos are then a thing of the past. But in Neubrandenburg the necessary machines to be able to create these digital photos are still missing. The announced delivery of the machines is not expected to arrive until September 2025. Until then, the citizens of Neubrandenburg have no choice and must look for alternatives. This situation creates some difficulties, as the transition period for the offices that are not technically equipped ended on July 31, 2025. Some administrations, such as the Demmin-Land office, have already extended their opening hours to give applicants more time to apply.
The requirements for biometric passport photos
In the meantime, anyone who needs a digital passport photo should pay attention to the specific requirements for biometric passport photos. These are important because a passport photo must meet strict requirements in order to be recognized as valid. The challenges of digitalization
The switch to digital passport photos is intended not only to adapt the requirements for identification documents, but also to promote the digitization of the authorities. Presence offices will be made easier, and it is promised that the new rules will also provide better protection against misuse and counterfeiting. This step is particularly important in times when criminals are increasingly working with data from identity cards. Nevertheless, there is already criticism of the machines: software errors and difficulties in taking photos of children are causing dissatisfaction among citizens.
