Neubrandenburg's citizens are still waiting for digital passport photo machines!

The introduction of digital passport photos in Germany is causing a lot of excitement and challenges - especially here in Neubrandenburg. The nationwide requirement for digital passport photos will come into force from May 1, 2025, but the city administration has not yet received a machine to create these images. The responsibility for this lies with Bundesdruckerei, which, however, delivered the technology late and stated the expected delivery date for September 2025. Until then, citizens will have to have their digital passport photos taken by other providers in the city, which is not exactly an ideal solution. And this despite the fact that the transition period for offices without technical equipment ended on July 31, 2025 Wismar FM reported.

The new regulation, which makes digital passport photos mandatory, aims to improve the security and quality of identification documents. The technology is intended to prevent manipulation and unauthorized border crossings. The focus is on defending against so-called morphing techniques - a method of fraud in which several portraits merge into one image. The aim is to further increase security with digital recording and encrypted transmission, which is only accessible with an individual data matrix code. However, these technological innovations also bring with them challenges such as: daily news highlights.

Problematic implementation

But the difficulties don't stop there. In other administrations, such as the Demmin-Land office, new machines have already led to extended opening times because applicants need significantly more time to take their photos. In particular, there is also criticism of the machine's software, which is described as faulty. This is particularly problematic when it comes to children's photos, which are often unusable and lead to dissatisfaction, reports the consumer advice center.

The good news: Digital passport photos can be taken in certified photo studios, by photographers or even in drugstore chains. When it is produced externally, you will then receive a data matrix code for submitting your application. However, this does not apply if the images are created directly in the authority. As soon as digital technology is available in Neubrandenburg, those responsible hope there will be fewer queues and a smoother process.

It will also be exciting to be able to send passports and ID cards by post from May 2025 - of course for a fee of 15 euros and securely by registered mail. However, driving licenses are not affected by the new regulations; Everything stays the same here. For anyone who would like to take a closer look at the new regulations, the consumer advice center has informative articles that explain the new legislation in detail.
