School history you can touch: New exhibition in the Kiekeberg Museum!

The history of the school system is an exciting chapter that not only covers the development of teaching methods and materials, but also illuminates the role of teachers over the centuries. Opened on November 8, 2025 Open-air museum on Kiekeberg in Rosengarten the special exhibition “Of quill pens and slide rules – development of the rural school system”. This impressive show will be on view until August 17, 2026 and promises to give visitors a deep insight into the changing nature of everyday school life.

With around 150 exhibits, the exhibition shows how the school has changed over two centuries. The focus is on topics such as school enrollment, school furniture, teaching methods and the role of teachers. The basis of this extraordinary exhibition is the collection ofChristine Strüfing, who, as a former school principal, has collected school objects for over 60 years and has brought together an impressive number of more than 1,000 exhibits.

A look back

What can visitors expect? The objects on display include satchels, murals, curricula and certificates, all of which tell stories from the past. The role-playing games offered for primary school classes are particularly exciting. These activities invite you to experience everyday school life from 120 years ago up close. Participatory activities for families at the weekends complement the offering and make a visit to the museum an experience for the whole family.

In addition, the students of IGS Seevetal contributed projects to the exhibition that represent their view of the school today and in the future. It is inspiring to see how the younger generation engages with the history of education while also contributing their own perspectives.

Education yesterday and today

The exhibition not only represents a nostalgic look back, but also reflects the current discourse about education. History of education as a research field sheds light on the connections between historical change in society and changes in the education system. Experts from history and education examine the developments that have shaped learning and teaching.

A scientific volume accompanying the exhibition is published by the open-air museum and offers in-depth information for those interested. In addition, a mini-series will start in the WEEKBLATT in which former students talk about their memories. These personal insights are enriching and help to make the topic of education tangible.
