Bridge construction over Ibitzbach: Things are finally moving forward for families and wheelchair users!
The dilapidated Ibitz Bridge over the Ibitzbach at the corner of Georg-Bohl-/Wilhelm-Irrgang-Weg has been a major problem for residents for years. Not only is the bridge closed to cars, but the narrow path, which is still passable, also poses a challenge for families with strollers and wheelchair users. This connection between the outskirts of the city and the city center is actively used, and the situation definitely needs to be improved. How Northern Courier reported, a solution is finally emerging.
The city has taken the necessary steps to build a new replacement for the dilapidated bridge. The responsible authority in Schwerin has given its approval so that the tenders will be prepared in August. The aim is to process the contract award quickly in order to complete construction by the end of 2025, provided the weather conditions cooperate. The project is a prefabricated bridge, but requires adjustments to the cladding on the slope towards the stream.
Funding and costs
The total costs for the bridge renovation or replacement construction amount to around 200,000 euros. The city's own contribution is around 81,617 euros and the rest is covered by urban development funding, which is provided in the amount of around 125,000 euros. These funds are particularly important to increase accessibility in the city. Because how Bayern.de makes clear, urban development funding particularly promotes measures that improve the accessibility of streets and squares for everyone.
The need for such measures is also increased by demographic changes, as more and more older people and people with disabilities rely on accessibility. Public space plays a crucial role in enabling all citizens to participate in social life. The standards for barrier-free design, such as DIN 18040, are an important basis here.
A step in the right direction
The imminent construction of the Ibitz Bridge will not only improve transport connections, but will also set an important example of support for families and people with disabilities. The city is showing that it has a keen eye for the needs of its citizens and is designing public spaces so that they are accessible to everyone.
We can therefore be curious to see how the situation around the Ibitz Bridge will develop and hope that the construction will go smoothly. After all, it is very important that all Cologne residents can stroll through their city without hurdles - a benefit for the entire social interaction!
