The Kittchen: Former prison becomes the new hostel highlight!

Kellerstraße 1, 23966 Wismar, Deutschland - On June 29, 2025, a very special event will take place in Wismar, which attracts architectural -loving and those interested in history alike. The architectural diversity under the motto "Building diversity" is celebrated at the day of architecture, organized by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Chamber of Architects. The focus is particularly on the former court prison, which has now been reopened as a hostel "The Kittchen". The conversion of the listed property presented the architects involved with exciting challenges. Nordkurier reports that architect Cindy Kruske had to master the balancing act between the important monument protection and modern comfort.

The building, which was built at the end of the 19th century and served as a youth arrest at the end of the 19th century, now shines in new splendor. The old prison windows were equipped with modern fixed glazing, which offer guests a breathtaking view of the historic city center. Previously, a new building was added that contains barrier -free multi -bed rooms. With a total of 31 rooms and 85 beds, including 15 former arrest cells, “Das Kittchen” is a successful combination of history and modern hospitality.

around six million euros were invested for the renovation. Managing Director Christopher Lunke attaches great importance to making the history of the house tangible for visitors. Tours and information boards are intended to present information about the moving past of the building. On the day of architecture, there will be special tours with the architect Cindy Kruske and the client Marco Krentz, who give deeper insights into the redesign and the challenges of the project.

In addition to the hostel, an exciting supporting program is offered at the day of the architecture under the motto "Kittchen meets Culture". Live music, exhibitions and interactive stations ensure an appealing atmosphere and make the visit an experience. The Chamber of Architects has also organized over 20 other projects and events in the region that promote art, building culture and joint discussions.
