Grandma fights for granddaughter with love: tragedy and hope united!
Nordwestmecklenburg, Deutschland - A moving case from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows how important alcohol consumption are during pregnancy and the resulting consequences for the families concerned. From near Schwerin, Simone G. has taken responsibility for her granddaughter Julia (name changed) in the past four years. Julia had to be put into her grandmother's care at the age of three after a tragic car accident. Simone describes the incident that changed her family's life forever: "That was the turning point when the youth welfare office Julia brought me to me." Ostsee-Zeitung that Julia's mother was heavily alcohol at the time and caused the accident with over two per thousand alcohol in the blood.
After the recent death of her daughter, who died at the age of only 27, Simone took over the role of the mother, comforter and supporter for Julia. Despite the difficulties that life brings with it - Julia has a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FAS) due to her mother's alcohol excesses during pregnancy - Simone succeeds in feeling life with the little one as full of happiness. "There are difficult days, but also many wonderful moments," she says, while looking in Julia's eyes.
The challenges of FASD
Julia is not easy: she is smaller and lighter than peers, suffers from language problems and shows impulsive behavior. These are typical symptoms of the FASD that arise from intrauterine alcohol exposure. According to a study on the prevalence of FASD in Germany, this disorder is the most common chronic disease with an incidence of 1.77 children per 100 live births. In addition, those affected are often not the necessary diagnosis, which leads to a further spread of the problem PMC
The symptoms of FASD are diverse and can range from developmental problems to cognitive problems to physical anomalies. Julia expresses the consequences in learning difficulties and behavioral problems. She is currently being taught in a school for children with learning weaknesses where her targeted support is given.
The legal framework
An interesting facet of this fate is the legal aspect. In Julia's case, the youth welfare office took the grandmother responsible, which is not always just a legal obligation. Grandparents often take over the care of their grandchildren, but Simone consciously decided to reorganize her life for Julia. "It was important to me to be there for her," she says. This decision is made by many grandparents who are in similar situations, even if there is no legal obligation.
This coherent drama shows how serious the effects of alcohol can be on future generations during pregnancy. Prevention measures are therefore important to educate pregnant women about the dangers and to avoid alcohol -related damage to unborn children.
Simone G. does her best to help Julia in this challenging phase of life. It is a story of love, responsibility and the infinite little moments of happiness that make up life, despite all the adverse circumstances. "Mom is now in heaven," says Julia often when she thinks of her mother. But Simone gives her the security and affection she needs to live her life to the fullest.
