Renovation of the Rehna-Nesow cycle path starts later than planned!

An interesting topic concerns cyclists in the Northwest Mecklenburg district: the renovation of the cycle path between Rehna and Nesow will begin later than planned. Loud Northern Courier The construction period will now begin on July 28th and is expected to end on August 15th, 2025. The reason for the postponement is due to capacity bottlenecks at the construction company commissioned to carry out the work.

The cycle path will be completely closed during the renovation, which means that cyclists will have to be redirected to federal highway 104. Vehicle traffic, on the other hand, is guided past the construction site on one side. These measures cost around 160,000 euros, which are financed by federal funds.

Significance of cycle path construction in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The project is part of a larger initiative to improve cycle paths in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. By 2033, over 200 kilometers of new cycle paths are to be created along state roads in order to expand the existing network from around 1,110 kilometers to over 1,300 kilometers. A total of around 75 million euros has been earmarked for this ambitious project, spread over a period of ten years. This information was provided in a recent communication from the State government announced.

The State Secretary for Transport Ines Jesse and Dr. René Firgt, the director of the State Office for Road Construction and Transport, presented the measures of the 2024 road construction program for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in which around 171.1 million euros are to be invested in roads and cycle paths. 13.5 million euros are earmarked for the construction of cycle paths. The goal is clear: the focus is on maintaining existing roads and expanding cycle paths.

Cycle path network in focus

The continuous growth of the cycle path network has been monitored since 2016. During this period, more than 194 kilometers of new cycle paths were created on federal roads and 146 kilometers on state roads. This resulted in the level of cycle paths on federal roads increasing from 44.5% to 54.9%, while the proportion on state roads increased from 28.7% to 32.9%. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is therefore above the national average.

A digital map from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania cycle network planner is available to all interested cyclists and shows the usable roads and paths in the region. This offer is particularly attractive for those who want to cycle safely and comfortably through the beautiful landscape.

The upcoming construction work is an important step towards a better and safer cycle path network, which ultimately also supports environmental considerations and makes cycling in the region even more attractive.
