Scandal in Wismar: Refugee Council makes serious allegations against district!

A significant dispute was sparked over the Haffburg refugee accommodation in Wismar and has brought both the district of Northwest Mecklenburg and the MV Refugee Council into the public eye. While the refugee council makes serious allegations, the district backs down and vehemently defends its actions. Ostsee-Zeitung reports that the Refugee Council claims that former employees were intimidated by threats of criminal charges if they spoke out about the conditions in the Haffburg.

The district rejects these allegations as unfounded and emphasizes that all employees are required to maintain confidentiality because they work with sensitive data. Nevertheless, the refugee council sheds light on the “unsustainable conditions” in the accommodation, including arbitrary sanctions by private security forces.

Controversial sanctions system

What exactly is so worrying about Haffburg's sanctions system? The Refugee Council reports arbitrary punitive measures taken by affected residents. For example, a resident who attends an integration course and works reports that she was moved to a so-called “punishment area” because she allegedly did not fulfill her cleaning duties. Refugee Council MV reports of appalling living conditions in this penal area, where there are no lockable cupboards, refrigerators or cooking facilities.

The sentence is being implemented by a private security service, which is an additional cause for concern. The affected residents are not allowed to enter regular accommodation during this time, which means further isolation.

Reactions and legal action

The district has now taken legal action against the refugee council because of the false allegations. The administration is surprised at the allegations and emphasizes that they had previously worked together diplomatically and in a solution-oriented manner. District Administrator Tino Schomann has sent letters to former employees that allegedly point to a contractual obligation of confidentiality in order to silence them.

Those responsible seem to be protecting themselves against the allegations. Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) supported the district administration in its approach. This raises the question of whether the protection of vulnerable groups in Haffburg is actually guaranteed. The Federal Ministry for Family Affairs has developed standards and measures to ensure protection for women and other vulnerable people in refugee accommodation.

Despite the minimum standards introduced, the Refugee Council is convinced that there are serious grievances in the Haffburg. The association is calling for an urgent review of the conditions and for all incidents to be clarified. An end to the sanctions system, which is perceived as arbitrary, would be the first step towards improving living conditions there.
