Blind spot: Drunk truck driver stopped with dangerous goods on the highway!
When you are driving a dangerous goods truck, responsible handling is the be-all and end-all. This principle was recently dramatically tested when a 35-year-old truck driver was stopped on Autobahn 19 between Berlin and Rostock on Wednesday evening. The driver was driving his vehicle with almost three per mille of alcohol in his blood and ended up in serpentine lines. Fortunately, an alert driver noticed this and immediately informed the police. The truck was finally stopped at the Bansower Forst rest area north of Linstow.
The tractor-trailer was loaded with almost seven tons of chemicals, including several pallets of materials labeled “corrosive substances,” which pose a high risk to the environment and road safety. What is particularly explosive is that the exact intended use of the cargo and the place of origin of the driver, who comes from Slovakia, are unknown. The police were able to maneuver the truck safely off the A19 after about 30 kilometers and took the driver to Güstrow Hospital for a blood test. Northern Courier reported that the truck's keys were confiscated.
Alcohol ban and strict regulations
Truck drivers, especially those who transport dangerous goods, are subject to strict regulations as part of the Hazardous Goods Ordinance on Roads, Railways and Inland Waterways (GGVSEB). These not only include a strict ban on alcohol during transport, but also the installation of an orange warning sign, immediate compliance with the regulations, and responsibility for the condition of the vehicle - a duty that also lies with the superior. Violations result in high fines, which can add up depending on the severity of the offense. Fine information points out that these can be up to 405 euros for road safety, the handling of dangerous goods and the condition of the vehicles not complying with the regulations.
For the driver, who is now in a legal gray area, the consequences are serious. The incident clearly shows how important it is to know and follow the rules and regulations for the transport of dangerous goods. In addition to the financial penalties, such violations can also endanger the safety of other road users. Behavior that is not only legally but also morally reprehensible.
The dangers in road traffic
In Germany, proven regulations for the transport of dangerous goods divide such substances into nine classes, although the importance of this classification should not be underestimated. We can only ensure safe road traffic through strict controls and compliance with all regulations. Especially in times when traffic and the transport of dangerous goods are increasing, it is crucial that drivers and companies have a good hand and act responsibly. This incident reminds us once again that mischief and recklessness have no place in traffic!
