The focus of Wismar: Memorial tour, renovation and new refugee accommodation!
In Wismar, the focus has recently been the focus of exciting and challenging developments. The Wismar University of Applied Sciences has a new Vice-Rector with 24-year-old Emelie Gareis. This was elected to the management committee by an overwhelming majority and is now the first student in this position. Her subject, civil engineering, indicates that she has a solid foundation for her new role.
Not only at the university is doing something, the community also becomes active. On June 27, the “Bike-the-Line” commemorative tour starts, which traces the route of the former Demarcation line from Wismar to Vienna. This event is reminiscent of the end of the Second World War and the establishment of the United Nations-an educational tour with a deep historical-political background.
renovation and new refugee accommodation
In the sports area, the clubhouse of the police sports club (PSV) is being renovated in the HW leasing stadium, supported by a Christmas campaign that brought in over 7000 euros. The renovation work should be completed by the beginning of 2026. At the same time, changes are emerging in the social area: A new refugee accommodation for 100 asylum seekers in Selmsdorf has already received approval. An urgent application from the municipality against the building permit was rejected by the Schwerin Administrative Court. The accommodation is built in container construction and should be there for three years.
While the city takes progressive steps, the situation of the refugee accommodation is accompanied by protests. On Monday evening, around 700 people in Wismar joined the nationwide protests against the federal and state energy and health policy. The speakers called for clear state LED measures to dampen the high electricity and gas prices as well as more support for the economy. The political situation in relation to the accommodation of refugees was also discussed. In particular gave the critical statement by the Mayor of Wismar Thomas Beyer, who established a connection between protests and alleged arson attacks on refugee accommodation.
arson attacks and rising acts of violence
The fire of a refugee accommodation in Groß Strömkendorf, which recently housed 14 people from Ukraine, has further heated the minds. The police are currently assuming arson and suspects a political background. These incidents are part of a worrying trend: politically motivated crimes against refugee accommodation increased in a total of 218 cases in 2024, with 28 violent offenses being registered. In view of these developments, many voices demand a clear attitude against right -wing extremist violence.
Against this background, it becomes clear how important it is to stand up for tolerance and cosmopolitanism. Last but not least, this also reflects Maria Reuter's efforts, who, as victims of abuse, now stands by other people in crises. The response in the community shows that many are willing to raise their voice and to make a positive change. The events of the past few weeks make one thing clear: society faces challenges that require political and social solutions. Whether through memorial tours or protest actions - the Wismarers bundle their strength and show both historical responsibility and a strong commitment to the future.
