Wismar is investing 550,000 euros in better bus transport for everyone!

There are exciting developments in the area of public transport in the Hanseatic city of Wismar. The city administration has decided to spend 550,000 euros on bus transport next year. This step was decided by the citizens and stipulates that the subsidy goes to the district of Northwest Mecklenburg. The aim is to noticeably improve the connection between the surrounding communities and Wismar and thus reduce car journeys. Mayor Thomas Beyer (SPD) emphasizes that it is necessary to find a compromise in order to continue this important project.

The implementation will take place as part of a three-year pilot project that will offer additional late and night trips. Horst Krumpen from the Die Linke party points to the increasing number of passengers and a potential analysis that holds out the prospect of 800,000 additional transports per year. For 2026, 13.64 million euros have already been earmarked for local public transport in northwest Mecklenburg, which corresponds to an increase of 3.5% compared to the previous year. In the long term, 19.67 million euros are expected for 2035, which is six million euros more than in 2026.

Cost sharing and forecasts

The city of Wismar will cover half of the costs for connections to surrounding communities next year. In addition, the surrounding communities themselves contribute 56,000 euros to the financing. An additional 42,000 transports are expected from Proseken/Gägelow and on the Westtangente in 2024, while a total of 33,300 transports are forecast from Zierow and Ostseeblick.

It will be exciting to see how Wismar deals with this pilot project. Will the additional night and late-night trips actually attract enough passengers to justify the high investment? The plans demonstrate good hands on the part of the city administration and a clear commitment to local public transport.

So while the plans for bus transport are taking concrete shape in Wismar, it remains to be seen whether this will also lead to traffic problems being brought under control in other cities. A look outside the box and into cities like Seattle could also be inspiring.
