Wismar is planning major housing construction and improving bus transport!

In the picturesque Hanseatic city of Wismar, which has around 43,000 inhabitants, there is news about urban development and cultural events. The city is currently focusing on closer cooperation with its Swedish partner city Kalmar, particularly in the areas of cruise tourism, sustainable urban development and climate change. Wismar is planning to cooperate on an EU cybersecurity project with a Polish city in order to strengthen its digital infrastructure. Ostsee-Zeitung reports.

Particularly noteworthy is the new residential project on the outskirts of the city. Multi-family houses and the renovation of listed buildings at the Klußer Mühle are planned here. The aim is to create a total of 97 rental apartments in the first two construction phases. The first phase includes 11 homes, and work will begin in spring 2026 once eight of the homes are sold.

Future infrastructure projects and events

In order to improve mobility in the city, the citizens of Wismar have decided to invest over half a million euros in bus transport. This takes the form of a pilot project that expands the route network within the city and to the surrounding communities. After the project ends, a grant will be provided to maintain the connections.

Wismar is also known for its rich cultural life. The “November Lights” will take place on November 7th and 8th, 2025: The old town will shine in festive light, accompanied by laser shows in the Georgen Church and a lantern parade on Saturday evening. For night owls, there are city tours on both days that start at 7 p.m.

Cruise tourism and local economy

As far as cruise tourism is concerned, the city has also recently invested millions in the expansion of the cruise dock in order to increase its tourist attractiveness. Loud NDR Last week, two cruise ships docked in Wismar, which gave around 1,200 travelers the opportunity to visit Wismar. Despite all this, it remains unclear how many passengers actually visited the city center, as many were transported to Schwerin and Lübeck due to the berthing conditions.

However, the economy in Wismar, as well as the catering industry, notice that cruise tourists often eat on board and do not take advantage of the local offerings. Although retailers were pleased with 175 bookings for city tours, the impact on local gastronomy is limited.

The city hopes that cruise visitors' positive experiences will encourage them to come back as individual tourists in the future and to fully enjoy Wismar's hospitality.

On November 9, 2025, the neighboring community of Dassow will also elect a new mayor. In this city with over 4,000 inhabitants, two candidates are running: former mayor Kerstin Weiss and Florian Müller, which is of great interest to local politics.

With all of these developments and events, Wismar remains a city in transition that impressively combines tradition and modernity.
