Wismar is planning a Skylounge”: enjoyment above the roofs of the Old Harbor!

A cozy evening in the new “Skylounge” above the picturesque harbor of Wismar could soon become a reality. A bar is planned to be built on the roof of a building in the Old Port, which was recently approved by the UNESCO Advisory Board. This monitors construction projects in the area of the UNESCO-recognized world heritage, as compliance with the world heritage rules is crucial in order not to endanger the title of Hanseatic city NDR reported.

The idea for the “Skylounge” has been buzzing in the minds of planners for about ten years, but approval was a long time coming. The latest design by a Wismar architectural firm envisages a covered glass house area that will provide space for tables, seating and a bar. While the original costs were estimated at between 400,000 and 500,000 euros, the estimated cost has now reached 1.2 million euros. This clearly shows that the project has taken steps forward, even if there are no concrete plans for an operator yet.

Approvals and planning

A very crucial point, however, is whether the project can be approved. Wismar's mayor Thomas Beyer (SPD) has emphasized that a change to the development plan is necessary before the project can be implemented. This change must be approved by the citizenry before investors can begin the at least one-year planning phase. The hopes of completion in 2027 are still hanging in the balance.

At the same time, the construction of a new fire station and public order office is also being considered, for which around 41 million euros have been earmarked. This aspect also shows that a lot is being invested in the infrastructure in Wismar. Preparations are underway and the city is using the opportunity to further enhance the historic old town, which was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

Wismar – A piece of history

Following the current approval of the “Skylounge”, Wismar’s long seafaring tradition will not only be preserved, but also revitalized. The city, which was first mentioned in documents in 1229, experienced an economic boom during its heyday in the 14th century. At that time, exports such as beer, fish and wool were their main source of income, and impressive brick churches were built. This historical substance is even more honored by the planned project on the harbor promenade.

The old town, known for the largest market square in Germany, framed by gabled houses from different eras, shows the origins of the city, which became one of the leading trading centers in the Baltic region during the Hanseatic era. The impressive churches such as St. Georgen, St. Marien and St. Nikolai are just some of the historical buildings that are accessible to visitors and whose preservation is of great importance for the future, as well Hamburg metropolitan region and UNESCO clarify.

Overall, the project to create the “Skylounge” is an exciting step towards a modern use of the historic city, which has a lot to offer. The next few months will show whether and how the project can take shape. Wismar, as a UNESCO World Heritage site worthy of protection, remains the focus of urban development.
