Oil giant deposits before Swinemünde: Mayor raises the alarm!

Swinoujscie, Polen - In the Baltic Sea, a new oil find causes excitement: The Canadian company Central European Petroleum (CEP) has discovered a large oil and natural gas field that comes on an estimated 200 million Barrel Oilquivalent. The offshore oil field with the name "Wollin Ost" is about six kilometers off the coast near Swinoujscie (Swinemünde) and is on the line of sight to the German island of Usedom, which is always valued as a picturesque holiday destination.

The company describes this find as the largest occurrence of this kind in Poland. Company boss Rolf G. Skaar describes this as a "historical moment" for the energy industry in Poland. The Polish chief geologist Krzysztof Galos is optimistic that the development of the occurrence could strengthen the country's energy security. Funding could begin in three to four years and cover about four to five percent of the annual Polish oil requirement.

concerns due to possible environmental effects

But not everyone is enthusiastic about the discovery. In particular, the mayor of Heringsdorf, Laura Isabelle Marisken, is concerned and demands clear information and protective measures for the region. The local council of Heringsdorf has also expressed great concerns about the potential environmental effects of the oil deposit. In order to take these concerns into account, the red-red state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has launched an information process with the Polish side.

The occurrence could not only be important for Poland. Should the find prove to be sustainable, it would be the largest oil and gas find since World War II in Poland, which could increase the geopolitical and economic importance of the region. This could also benefit the trends in the European energy market, where Poland is increasingly establishing itself as an attractive goal for investing in the offshore energy industry.

Polen's way into the future of offshore energy

The latest discovery of the oil field is preceded by a greater commitment of Poland in the offshore sector. How Globe News Wire reports, Poland enters the operational phase of the offshore development, with the first wind turbines already installed in the Baltic Sea. By 2026 the electricity from offshore sources should flow into households.

A large energy transition project that could redefine Poland's role in the European energy future is the conference "Offshore Wind Poland 2025", which will take place in November. Here politicians, experts and scientists will come together to discuss the current state of the projects and the national industrial strategy. With an investment campaign of up to 300 billion PLN in the maritime sector by 2040, this could be an important step for the region.

at a time when Europe's energy security plays a central role, Poland will certainly be in international focus with this recent discovery and the associated plans for the development of offshore.
