Oil barrier on the Müritz: protection from heating oil needed for another two weeks!
The oil barrier on the Müritz near Röbel remains in place, and there is a good reason for that. After an accident last Monday, August 25, 2025, an estimated 10 to 15 liters of heating oil spilled into the lake. This substance spread into a bay that is typical of the region with its boat sheds, boathouses and jetties. The fire brigade was quickly on the scene and vacuumed up the oil, but unfortunately a small remaining amount could not be completely captured. It was therefore decided to set up an oil barrier to prevent the oil film from spreading further. This reports NDR.
The decomposition process of the oil film has already begun and is visible as the discoloration of the water is already noticeable. The responsible authorities assume that this process should be completed in one to two weeks. To ensure that this goes smoothly, boats are currently not allowed to drive over the oil barrier to prevent the oil film from spreading. The State Office for Agriculture and the Environment Mecklenburg Lake District has taken on the task of closely monitoring the mining process and will inform the public about the lifting of the protective measure on its website, as well StALU communicates.
The dangers of oil pollution
The problem of oil pollution is not an isolated incident, but affects numerous bodies of water around the world. Around 6,000 tons of oil enter the oceans every year, which has serious consequences for the ecosystem and its animal inhabitants. Birds are particularly hard hit and are often among the first victims to die from contact with oil as their feathers become sticky and they become hypothermic. Marine mammals are also at risk because toxic substances in their respiratory and digestive systems can cause nerve damage. Researchers recently documented this alarming reality in a study NABU is to be read.
It is clear that any accident like the one in Röbel not only represents a short-term challenge, but can also have long-term effects on the health of the waters. Complete bacterial degradation of oil can take decades, depending on the type of oil, water temperature and other factors. It currently remains to be seen how quickly the situation on the Müritz will return to normal, but the measures are an important step towards protecting the environment and its residents.
