Politicians are pushing for the rapid expansion of the Western Pomerania mainline!

The Vorpommern-Magistrale is currently in the spotlight because there is great pressure on politicians to finally improve the important rail connections between Sassnitz and Berlin. An action alliance has been formed to promote the expansion of the route, and on Monday a special train will go to Berlin, where a demonstration will take place in front of the Chancellery. Loud NDR Mayors, business representatives and alliance members demonstrate for compliance with political promises.

Last year, the then Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) promised to expand the railway line to 160 km/h. However, the route is currently only designed for 120 km/h, which puts a strain on many commuters and travelers. Günther Jikeli, spokesman for the action alliance, sums up the demands of those affected and pushes for a rapid renovation and modernization of the highway.

Financing the measure

The estimated costs for the expansion are around 500 million euros, and there are already proposals to secure financing from Deutsche Bahn's existing network or the special infrastructure fund. It is important to the initiators that the funds are anchored in the 2025 budget. After all, citizens don't just make a name for themselves at the demonstration: a petition to improve rail connections for Western Pomerania was supported by a total of 4,607 signatories from all over Germany. This will now be discussed in the Petitions Committee of the Bundestag vorpommern-magistrale.de reported.

Future steps and political reactions

In order to increase the pressure, the Die Linke parliamentary group in the Bundestag made a small request to prioritize the expansion of the Western Pomerania mainline. This refers to promises made in the summer of 2023 and asks specifically about progress since then. The measure is included in the urgent need of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 and could therefore soon become more important, reports Bundestag.de.

As we head into the new year, there is a lot of movement in this matter. It remains exciting to see whether the promises will actually be translated into actions and how the political landscape will continue to develop. The citizens and political representatives are not letting up - the Western Pomerania mainline must be put on the track of the future!
