Mysterious Fabian murder case: Police are urgently looking for witnesses!

The Rostock criminal police and the public are currently busy searching for the murderer of eight-year-old Fabian from Güstrow. The boy disappeared on October 10, 2025, and just four days later his body was found in a pond near Klein Upahl. In the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY… unsolved” an urgent call for witnesses was launched on Wednesday evening, which was supported by moderator Rudi Cerne and a chief inspector.

Investigators believe Fabian was killed between 10:50 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the day he disappeared. What is particularly disturbing is the fact that the perpetrator tried to burn the body to cover his tracks. The program showed a photo of the pond with flames, which is why the police are now asking the public for help. She is looking for witnesses who observed anything unusual on October 10th, be it people or vehicles in the area during the period in question.

News from the region

Fabian's last known location was his home on Schweriner Strasse in Güstrow, where he left the house at around 10:50 a.m. on the morning of October 10th. Police are also appealing for information from anyone who saw him during or afterward. Anyone with information can contact the Rostock police on 0800-5977268.

According to Fabian Puchelt from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office, there are already numerous clues, some of which appear promising. However, investigators have decided not to reveal any further details about the clues in order not to jeopardize the investigation. Another sign of sadness was the large turnout at a funeral service for the boy, where many visitors expressed their condolences.

Current crime situation in Germany

But Fabian's case is not just a local matter. It also highlights the general development of crime in Germany. According to the Police Crime Statistics (PKS) from the Federal Criminal Police Office, there was a decrease of 1.7% to around 5.84 million crimes in 2024. This is primarily due to fewer cannabis crimes, due to partial legalization since April 2024. However, the number of crimes that affect people's sense of security is increasing.

Statistics show that crimes against life, i.e. murder and manslaughter, accounted for around 0.1% of cases in 2024, while the most common crimes are thefts and property crimes. Crime figures are particularly high in federal states such as North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. In city states such as Berlin, Bremen or Hamburg, the likelihood of becoming a victim of crime is also increased.

The clearance rate was 58% in 2024, which fell slightly compared to the previous year. The number of suspects has also decreased, with the number of non-German suspects increasing to 41.8%. These developments underline the complexity of the crime problem in Germany and make it clear that a turning point in public security may be a long time coming.

The Rostock criminal police remain determined to solve the Fabian case and hope for support from the public. The task of maintaining people's sense of security is of central importance, even against the backdrop of increasing crime.
