Rostock Evershagen: Burst water pipe causes chaos and closures!
Early on Sunday morning, June 22, 2025, a shocking event hit residents in Rostock Evershagen: a burst water pipe caused severe flooding in Bertolt-Brecht-Straße and Ehm-Welk-Straße. At about 1:20 a.m., the water pipe burst directly in front of an apartment building, flooding sidewalks and streets and leaving more than 100 vehicles in 20 centimeters of standing water, as NDR reported.
The situation was serious: either from the water pipe or the Nordwasser emergency service turned off the water, thus preventing further flooding. The residents, around 150 households, had to prepare for uncertain times without drinking water. “It is unclear when the water will flow again,” said the responsible authorities. Damage to pavement slabs and curbs as well as in some basements of the apartment building was unavoidable, which further aggravated the situation.
Repair work and traffic restrictions
Two water trucks were deployed to clear up the situation. The area is currently marked and temporarily cordoned off so that cleaning and repair work can be carried out. Ehm-Welk-Straße is expected to remain partially closed until around 10 a.m. so that the necessary work can be carried out.
Similar incidents are not uncommon. According to a report on Huhang Group Almost 30% of water supply systems worldwide are affected by corroded pipe networks. Corrosion not only leads to leaks, but can also cause significant costs, running into billions. Such issues must be addressed to secure public infrastructure and avoid future disasters.
The importance of modern water infrastructure
Incidents such as the current pipe burst in Rostock remind us of how important a modern and robust water supply is. Ineffective pressure management and old materials are common causes of pipe bursts. The municipality should therefore invest in modern infrastructure to prevent such incidents and ensure water quality.
In the meantime, the affected residents have no choice but to hope for the damage to be repaired quickly and endure the inconvenience of the water shortage. This is how many people in the neighborhood survive the time together with questions and support until normality returns. What is it called? “Opposites attract,” but in this situation everyone is hoping for a quick return to normal conditions.
