26 companies competing: Who will build the new Warnow Bridge in Rostock?

Something is happening in Rostock: The construction of the new Warnow Bridge is getting closer and is pleasing not only the city administration, but also the numerous interested construction companies. The total costs for this ambitious project amount to an impressive 63 million euros, with the federal government planning to cover around 35.75 million euros. The Europe-wide tender has been running since the summer and there is great interest, as 26 companies from Germany and other European countries have expressed their interest. However, not many binding offers have been received yet.

The deadline for submitting offers has now been extended to November 14th, meaning that many companies may still be submitting their documents at the last minute. The contract could then be awarded by mid-March, but the timing for the building permit from the State Office for Road Construction and Transport remains unclear.

Details about the construction project

The Rostock Society for Urban Renewal, Urban Development and Housing mbH, responsible for the project, is a public company controlled by a regional authority. A pedestrian and cycle path bridge is planned as a steel structure with a concrete carriageway. This bascule bridge will have a height of 25.74 m and a span of 70.00 m. The total length of the bridge is 541.16 m and the width is 6 m. The estimated construction period begins in December 2025 and is expected to be completed by May 2028.

The award depends not only on the legal force of the planning approval decision, but also on the funding. The city has had to significantly increase its own contribution, originally limited to a maximum of 15 percent, due to increased costs. At the same time, negotiations are ongoing with the federal government about increasing funding, as the costs now differ from the original estimates.

The requirements for companies

In order to qualify for this contract, companies need proof of their economic and financial performance as well as at least two successfully completed bridge construction projects using steel composite construction. Only offers submitted electronically via the German procurement market are permitted.

The project details and the conditions for participation have already been announced. The award procedure also stipulates that price offers are submitted according to the lowest price procedure, which means that the most cost-effective proposal receives the highest point rating.

Overall, the construction of the Warnow Bridge is eagerly awaited, not only because of the increased mobility it will bring to the city, but also because of the positive economic stimulus that could be triggered by the project. The city and the companies involved are optimistic about the future and hope that everything goes according to plan.

For the residents and the city of Rostock itself, the completion of this construction project would be a big step towards better infrastructure. Anyone who is happy can also be optimistic - and with a new bridge being built, this optimism beckons in the Hanseatic city!
