Banksy in Rostock: Street art exhibition delights young and old!

The hype surrounding Banksy's unique street art has reached Rostock! The unofficial exhibition “Banksy – A Vandal turned Idol” opened on July 11th and runs until December 14th. In the venerable Ostsee Zeitung print shop on Lindenstrasse, art lovers and the curious can discover the works of one of the most mysterious artists in the world on 1,600 square meters. The [Ostsee Zeitung](https://www.ostsee-zeitung.de/lokales/rostock/banksy- exhibition-in-rostock-preise-tickets-parkplaetze-im-ueberblick-3MFULM3JHNBD5DNQZEQJCODL3A.html) highlights that the exhibition features around 140 exhibits, including eleven originals and 44 limited prints from private collections.

What can you imagine by that? The absolute highlights include the iconic motifs such as “Girl with Balloon” and the controversial rats for which Banksy has become known. The exhibition not only offers an impressive collection of his works, but also insights into the influence of other artists, such as Andy Warhol, on Banksy's work. Nordkurier has reported that this show is structured thematically and illuminates the political content of his artworks.

The exhibition is open on different days to allow visitors to plan flexibly:

  • Dienstag bis Donnerstag: 11 bis 17 Uhr
  • Freitag, Samstag, Feiertage: 11 bis 18 Uhr

Directions and exhibition rules

Getting there is easy, the Steintor stop is easy to reach with various bus and tram lines. There are also some parking options nearby, such as the Am Court car park, which is only 650 meters away.

Of course, there are a few rules to follow when visiting the exhibition: works of art may not be touched and food is not permitted. Backpacks and larger luggage are not permitted, although free lockers will be available. Photography is permitted – but without a flash.

The debate as to whether street art is art or vandalism has been going on in society for decades. The origins of street art include impressive pioneers such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, who contributed to the development of these formats. The potential of technology in recent years has led to Banksy also being considered one of the most expensive artists in the world. Die Presse shows how the perception of graffiti and street art has changed. Where vandalism and crime were once the focus, today an independent and valuable art form has emerged.
