Volunteer card gives Rostock recognition: 74 heroes honored!

The city of Rostock celebrates the commitment of its volunteers. On June 14, 2025, the 29th volunteer card was awarded during an American football game between the Rostock Griffins in the Ostseestadion. At this festive ceremony, 74 volunteers from 24 different clubs received the coveted award, which has now reached a total of 2,058. The volunteer card was presented by Steffen Bockhahn, the Senator for Youth and Social Affairs, Health, Schools and Sport, who emphasized the importance of volunteering for the city's society.

The event took place in the Business Club South of the Ostseestadion and gave the volunteers the opportunity to watch the exciting game against the Elmshorn Fighting Pirates live. A group photo with Alexander Czerwinski, the president of the Rostock Griffins e.V., and the mascot Griffino created lasting memories. What is particularly noteworthy is that members of four new organizations were honored for the first time: the German Seaman's Mission Rostock e.V., the Evangelical Lutheran Slütergemeinde Rostock-Dierkow, the Rostock Müllfrei e.V. and the Singakademie Rostock e.V.

Advantages of the volunteer card

The volunteer card is more than just a piece of paper - it is a sign of appreciation for the volunteer work. With this card, holders benefit from various discounts that apply to sports, culture, leisure and local public transport. The Rostock Griffins also offer special discounts for cardholders. The card lasts for three years and also offers access to reduced-price admission to museums, theaters and swimming pools as well as discounts at regional businesses. This not only rewards the volunteers, but also promotes social cohesion.

Applying for the volunteer card is easy. The prerequisite for this is that the applicants have been working on a voluntary basis for at least three years. For young people, just one year of commitment is enough. The volunteers must be active for at least five hours per week or a total of 250 hours per year and may not receive any remuneration beyond the reimbursement of expenses. Application forms are available both at City Hall and online, making the application process even easier.

Transparency and data protection

When applying for the volunteer card, the responsible body processes the applicants' personal data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Data Protection Act. The data is used exclusively for the stated purposes and rights regarding data protection are available at any time. An experienced data protection officer ensures that all legal requirements are adhered to to ensure the security of personal data.

In summary, the volunteer card not only promotes the appreciation of those who work for their fellow human beings, but also strengthens the entire community. More and more organizations and small clubs are benefiting from this initiative, which keeps volunteerism alive in Rostock and opens up important access to cultural and social offerings. So if you have your heart in the right place and are active in Rostock, you shouldn't be afraid to apply for the volunteer card.
