Hanse Sail 2025: Over 100 traditional sailors conquer Rostock!

The maritime spectacle of the year will soon begin in Rostock: The Hanse Sail invites numerous traditional sailors and water enthusiasts to gather from August 7th to 10th, 2025. Over 90 traditional ships have already registered, and the organizers are expecting an impressive fleet of up to 110 boats. These include galleasses, gaff schooners and many other historic ships that keep the maritime heritage alive.

Particularly noteworthy are the largest traditional ship, the “Gulden Leeuw” with an impressive 69.90 meters, as well as the frigate “Nordrhein-Westfalen”, which holds a length record for participation at 149.50 meters long. On the other hand, the smallest ship, “Den Ruyghenhill”, is impressive at 18 meters. New to the Hanse Sail this year is the 129-year-old flagship “Belem”, which with its 58 meters will be part of the event for the first time.

A varied program on land and on water

But it's not just the ships that attract visitors. Around 200 artists are also expected to perform on 20 stages. The musical variety ranges from jazz to pop to shanty and ensures the best entertainment along the maritime backdrop. Last year, almost 500,000 visitors flocked to the Hanse Sail, with 16,000 of them taking advantage of the opportunity to sail on the ships.

Visitors can look forward to numerous open-ship events. This opportunity offers direct contact with the historic ships and their crews. In addition to ship watching, guests can enjoy the maritime atmosphere with various land-based activities, dance performances and culinary delights. In Warnemünde and Rostock there are generous “strolling miles” that are particularly attractive for families.

Arrival options and support from the city

The Hanse Sail is not only a highlight in the maritime calendar, but also an economic driver for the region. The city of Rostock supports the event financially, and many hotels are fully booked during the Hanse Sail weeks. A shuttle service takes visitors to Warnemünde, where the truly lively maritime atmosphere can be felt.

Public transport will be significantly expanded during the festival to accommodate the large number of visitors. S-Bahn connections between Rostock main station and Warnemünde are offered every 7.5 minutes, and there are also numerous chartered trains. So nothing stands in the way of a carefree experience!

In total, the Hanse Sail attracts over a million people every year and is considered one of the largest maritime festivals in Europe. Over 250 sailing boats, steamships and other traditional watercraft are presented in the ports of Rostock and Warnemünde, where the total length of the participating ships is an impressive 6 kilometers. This event is a homage to Hanseatic history and culture, which is kept alive primarily by the maritime community.
