Rostock celebrates 9 years of public services: This is how the city lives sustainably!
On June 23, 2025, Public Services Day will be celebrated for the ninth time in Rostock. This special day highlights the relevance of municipal services that are crucial to citizens' quality of life. In Rostock, it is primarily the RVV Rostocker Liefer- und Verkehrs-Holding GmbH companies that actively assume responsibility in this area. They ensure that citizens are well supplied not only with energy, but also with important utility services. Loud Rostock town hall Stadtwerke Rostock AG is responsible for the environmentally friendly energy supply, while Rostocker Straßenbahn AG transports around 152,000 passengers every day with a fleet of 51 trams and around 90 buses.
The drinking water supply must not be forgotten either. Nordwasser GmbH reliably supplies around 270,000 people in Rostock and 28 surrounding communities with fresh drinking water. Wastewater treatment is carried out in an environmentally friendly manner, and this process uses digester gases to supply electricity to the sewage treatment plants. Stadtentsorgung Rostock GmbH also ensures proper waste disposal and street and sidewalk cleaning with over 200 employees and around 160 emergency vehicles.
Rostock in the spirit of climate protection
The Hanseatic city of Rostock is not only the largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with around 210,000 inhabitants, but is also committed to climate protection. With the “Master Plan 100% Climate Protection”, the city is pursuing ambitious goals in terms of sustainability and environmental protection. How Climate protection municipality reports, Rostock is particularly affected by the effects of climate change, which is reflected in flood protection concepts and rainwater management projects. These challenges are addressed under the umbrella of “KOGA – Municipal Joint Task for Inland Flood Protection”.
In addition to the water management projects, Rostock is committed to a “plastic-free city” that promotes strategies to avoid waste in companies and households. Administrative buildings and events already use reusable systems for food and drinks, a step in the right direction to reduce the annual mountain of 2.8 billion disposable cups that are thrown away in Germany.
Economic tailwind
The economic connection through the Rostock freight and fishing port GmbH makes a significant contribution to the development of the region. But the marketing of Rostock as a business and tourism location is also not neglected. Rostock Business and Rostock Marketing are active here and present the city for what it is: a place with a lot of potential and quality of life. The day of public services offers a great opportunity to thank all those who stand behind these municipal services and to preserve the independence and high quality of life in Rostock.
Rostock is not just a city that has long stretches of beach and a traditional university. It also shows how modern climate protection can be implemented - in the spirit of a livable and sustainable environment for all citizens.
