Rostock in the hotel dispute: Radisson abdicates, Scanhotels takes over!

There's a lot of rumblings in Rostock! Friedemann Kunz, the entrepreneur from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, has sent a strong signal and ended his collaboration with the Radisson Hotel Group. The reason for this entrepreneurial turnaround is an unexpected dispute that leads to the renaming of two hotels in the Hanseatic city. From July 16, 2025, the hotels will operate under the new brand “Scanhotels”, as Nordkurier reports.

The former “Radisson Blu” at Kröpeliner Tor will henceforth be called “Scanhotels City”, while the new building on the Silo Peninsula is to be opened as “Scanhotels Stadthafen”. In addition, the Radisson logo has already been removed from the facade of these houses. According to Aviation.direct, this resulted in the unilateral termination of the management contracts, which are usually long-term.

The background to the conflict

The conflict between Kunz and Radisson had been brewing for some time. While Friedemann Kunz is merging its hotel holdings into the Friedemann Kunz Family Foundation, Radisson emphasizes that the termination of the management contracts is legally controversial. The spokesman for the family foundation, Hansjörg Kunze, even announced a legal review of the name change. Aviation.direct reports that the Radisson Hotel Group and its global Chinese investors were surprised by the termination.

In a highly competitive situation in the hotel industry, where the number of brands and concepts has increased rapidly, operators are faced with challenges that are becoming increasingly pressing in the digital age. The switch to the Scanhotels brand shows how important it is to assert yourself in the industry. The increasingly complex management contracts are also a hot potato, which often leads to legal disputes, as can be read in Hotellerie.de.

View of the new scan hotels

The new Scanhotels not only promise a breath of fresh air, but also additional amenities. “Scanhotels Stadthafen” will also offer offices, restaurants in the inner courtyard and on the roof terrace. A particular highlight is the planned 300 square meter spa area with an outdoor sauna and a view of the harbor. A fitness center of 100 square meters and several saunas are also being planned, which underlines the investment volume of more than 90 million euros.

Together, the two new hotels in Rostock will offer almost 500 rooms, which means good business for the city and could create new jobs. General Manager Daniel Bojahr, who supports the family, also has big plans - he wants to introduce his own loyalty program to bind guests to the brand in the long term.

The developments surrounding the scan hotels could not only have an impact on Rostock, but also on the entire industry. The legal disputes are just beginning and show how dynamic and multifaceted the hotel industry is.
