Rostock's Café at the Pavilion: A place for enjoyment and saying goodbye!
There is a very special café in Rostock that is known for its welcoming atmosphere and unique cakes. The “Café am Pavillon”, run by Christin Liebscher and Manuela Rettig, has become a popular meeting place at Satower Straße 132, opposite the New Cemetery. This is where life meets in an environment that is often associated with sadness. In 2025, the two women realized their dream of creating a place as self-employed people that is suitable for both social moments and quiet farewells.
Christin Liebscher, 26 years old, bakes several cakes and up to ten different sheet cakes every day. Their most popular treat is the sawdust cake, a treat you won't find anywhere else. “We don’t just want to offer coffee and cake, we also want to create a safe space for memories,” she explains. Their vision went beyond sweet treats: the two operators wanted to offer an opportunity to stay at the cemetery that was open to both mourners and other visitors.
A place of memories
The café is often booked for small, closed funeral parties and can accommodate up to 15 people. Individual funeral ceremonies can be organized here that offer space for conversation and consolation. “We want people to be able to share their memories in a familiar setting,” emphasizes Manuela Rettig, 53 years old. In addition to coffee and tea, the operators also support the organization of the farewell ceremony to ensure a dignified end.
The offer also includes four different breakfast variations, which will be available from November. The operators attach great importance to quality and regionality: for example, honey is used from a beekeeper from the garden city and the coffee is freshly brewed, not from a vending machine. “The hard work that goes into this is rewarded by the thanks of the guests,” says Christin, delighted with the positive response.
Opening times and further information
From November the opening hours of the “Café am Pavillon” will change. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., while there are closed days on Sundays and Mondays. These adjustments will make the café even more accessible to clients who want to say goodbye in a respectful atmosphere. Those interested can find out more about the café's individual offerings on the café website.
For customers, the “Café am Pavillon” is not only a place for food and drinks, but also a retreat for meaningful moments. It shows how important it is to come together in difficult times and preserve memories. Here, gastronomic skills are combined with emotional understanding.
