The Borkener Zeitung reports that a second accident occurred about two hours later in the Evershagen district. Here a 35-year-old pedestrian was hit by a wheel loader. She also had to be taken to hospital with serious injuries. The exact circumstances that led to this incident are still unclear, and investigations by the Rostock Criminal Police Office are ongoing.

But what do the current traffic figures say about this? In 2023, traffic accidents in Germany have increased in a worrying way. According to dvr.de, 2,839 people died in traffic accidents - an increase of 1.8% compared to the previous year. In addition, the number of injured people rose to 366,557 people, which corresponds to an increase of 1.5%. According to Manfred Wirsch, President of the German Road Safety Council, the protection of pedestrians in particular is becoming increasingly urgent. The last three years have shown a worrying increase in pedestrian deaths and injuries.

Need for a foot traffic strategy

Wirsch emphasizes that the federal government urgently needs a pedestrian traffic strategy. The amendment to the StVO, which authorizes municipalities to order zebra crossings without special proof, could also help to improve the situation in the future. A further step would be to simplify the use of land for walking and cycling. In addition, a speed limit of 30 km/h could be introduced in playgrounds and busy school routes on main roads in order to increase the safety of pedestrians.

The new regulation also offers, among other things, the opportunity to close gaps between existing 30 km/h speed limits. In order to achieve even greater traffic safety, the DVR has formulated ten key demands, including increased traffic monitoring and the adjustment of maximum speed limits.

The incidents in Rostock clearly illustrate how important it is to increase road safety. A responsible transport policy is not only necessary, but overdue.
